Munnar – Eravikulam National Park
Rajamalai in Munnar – The main attraction of Rajamala is to watch the NilgiriTahr in its natural habitat but it is the natural beauty of the destination that makes another attraction. Rajamala is among the most attractive Hill Stations in Idukki, located 15 km from Munnar. You’re encircled by what seems like a lush green carpet on all sides. Rare flora and fauna abound along with some of the finest trekking trails in the area. These take you to some of the most wonderful points in the district where the entire valley seems to open up on command.
The national park is managed by the Kerala Department of Forest and Wildlife, Munnar. The highest peak is Anamudi (2690m). The forests you see here are evergreen tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forest. You can find small streams here, which later merge to form tributaries to Periyar and Chalakudy rivers. Lakkom waterfalls are located in this region.
In 1975 Eravikulam was declared as a wildlife sanctuary and then in 1978 it was given the status of a National park. The main motive behind this was to protect the rare Nilgiri Tahr and Hemitragus Hylocrious, which are common here. But now the park is home to numerous protected species of flora and fauna.
Tourists are allowed to travel deep into the forest to explore the hidden beauty of the environment around them. Private vehicles are not allowed inside. Only a few minibusses are operated inside in order to control environmental pollution. The trips are arranged by the forest department.
